Wurzeralmbahn (Wurzeralm, Hinterstoder: HiWu ski area) one of the most modern funiculars in Europe is getting a new look: The Wurzeralmbahn operates in the Upper Austrian holiday region Pyhrn-Priel and takes skiers and hikers up to the alpine pasture of the same name at an altitude of 1,400 metres.
The funicular to the Wurzeralm has existed since 1978. In 1996 it was modernized to one of the fastest funiculars in Europe. Since then, around 20 million guests have been reliably and safely transported to the wonderful high plateau of the Wurzeralm in summer and winter.

Summer season with new cars
Hinterstoder-Wurzeralm Bergbahnen AG invested around four million euros in the new funicular. The order for the new, modern cabins was awarded to the Upper Austrian company Carvatech based in Oberweis near Gmunden. "The investments in the funicular to the Wurzeralm and the planned new start in the summer is an important, also symbolic sign for the domestic tourism, especially in times of the Corona crisis: We start again and it should go steeply upwards", says Wirtschafts- and tourism councilor Markus Achleitner.
"Covid-19 has thwarted our plans, but we will still be able to start our summer season on the Wurzeralm with the new cars," said Ing. Helmut Holzinger, CEO of Hinterstoder-Wurzeralm Bergbahnen AG. The new cars are scheduled to be delivered at the end of June 2020, and summer operations will start at the end of July 2020.
